Adult Autism Assessment

Many adult Autism assessments are long, can cost multiple thousands of dollars, use testing measures created for children, and are not affirming of Autistic identities. My goal is to create an affirming assessment process that's comprehensive but still affordable.

Scroll down to read more about how I do assessments.

I view Autism as a neurotype, rather than a disorder that needs to be treated or fixed. Discovering your Autistic identity can be an important first step to better understanding yourself, finding self acceptance and learning how to accommodate your needs.

I have received training for Masters level clinicians for diagnosing Autism and ADHD, and I engage in regular consultation from other professionals in this area.

My assessment process uses various self report measures along with structured clinical interviews, however, it is not a neuropsychological assessment.

You might be a good fit for an assessment with me if:

  • You're already self diagnosed or considering the possibility of an Autistic identity.

  • You're looking for confirmation from a professional.

  • You don't need a letter for accommodations or disability benefits.

  • You're located in California.

Autism Assessment FAQs

Can you write me accommodation letters for work or school?

An Autism assessment for disability benefits such as SSI or SSD, or school/workplace accommodations can only be done by a Licensed Psychologist ( PhD or PsyD). As a Marriage and Family Therapist Associate, I'm unable to provide this service.

Will the result show up on my health record?

Short answer: no. There are potential downsides about having an official Autism diagnosis on your health record. My assessments are geared towards helping you better understand yourself, your identity and your needs.

The exception to this is if you want reimbursement from your insurance company. See more below.

Can I use my insurance?

I do not take insurance. I can offer you a super-bill to submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. Some insurance companies will not cover services provided by Associates. Check with your individual provider to see what they will reimburse for.

Be aware that using your insurance requires a diagnosis on your health record.

How much does it cost?

The total cost for three 90 minute sessions as well as a personalized summary and recommendations is $800.

Will my family members be involved?

If you want to bring in family or friends to provide an outside perspective as part of your assessment, you absolutely can. If that's not possible for you, or you're not interested in inviting anyone else into the process, that's totally okay too!

What if I can't afford it?

I want to make assessments accessible. If you need a reduced fee because of your financial circumstances, contact me and we can talk about the possibilities for reduced fee services.

What if I'm not in California?

At this time, I'm only able to see clients located in California.

I thought only Psychologists can diagnose Autism?

In California, with appropriate additional training, Masters level therapists can diagnose Autism. I have received continuing education training related to adult Autism diagnosis and neurodiversity affirming practice, and I engage in regular consultation with other professionals.
